This 2-day studio workshop puts colour practice before theory, and prioritises your subjective experience of colour over prescribed ‘rules’, in order to use colour in a more personal and effective way. Following from the teachings of Josef Albers and the discoveries of Michel Eugène Chevreul, you will learn about the subjective and elusive qualities of colour through fascinating guided experiments and studies. Conventional colour theory will also be explained and we will identify the shortcomings (and falsehoods) of traditional colour systems.
Starting with paint pigments, you will be shown the many important characteristics of paint, which will help you to use it more effectively. You will then learn various mixing techniques, palette set-ups, different types of paint application, and finally how to bring about colour harmony in your paintings.
This is a ‘hands-on’ workshop filled with practical exercises including:
- Colour experiments that focus not only on colour mixing and matching on the palette and in the eye
- Painted studies from life and from nature, using natural objects
- Small reproductions by some famous artists
You will be shown many examples of relevant art from the late 19th century and 20th century, from Post-Impressionism to Bauhaus and beyond. This is a must for all artists regardless of your style or paint medium.
