Sky, Time & Light: How Nature’s Rhythms Shape Us

Join dark-skies enthusiast, David Black, by the fireside (weather permitting) for a one-hour journey through the science and storytelling of the sky above us and the light around us. We’ll explore how ancient people used the heavens to measure time, how our body clocks keep us aligned with the day, and how the misuse of artificial light affects both human health and wildlife. From cave paintings to atomic clocks, from star navigation to circadian rhythms, this talk reveals the connections between astronomy, biology, community, and the environment - and offers simple, practical steps, including reviving older forms of timekeeping, for healthier living and protecting our dark skies.

This is an outdoor event, please dress appropriately. A bonfire and hot drinks will be provided. In the case of rain, this event will take place in the tent at CECAS. Use of public transport is encouraged.

About the speaker: David Black holds a BSc in Mathematical Physics and has a long-standing interest in sustainability, permaculture, and cooperative living. He has been studying the science of light and timekeeping in depth for the past two years, attending both the CELT Social Permaculture course and the International Artificial Light at Night Conference.
