RESILIENCE Dance Company and Continuum Vocal Ensemble present Speak Easy - Move Loud: a cross-era, cross-disciplinary collaboration. Exploring ideas of resistance, cultural upheaval, identity and belonging through music and movement, this original concert will transport audiences to the 1920s with themes that still resonate in today's world.
Directed and curated by John McDonald and Emily Haussler, the performance features live singing by Continuum with choreography by Josiah Gundersen, Abbi LeBaube, Jorrell Lawyer-Jefferson, and Emily Haussler and performance by RESILIENCE. Through music and movement, we'll explore ideas of self, control, power, grief, change and acceptance while interrogating our responsibilities as a community during times of societal and cultural upheaval. With thematic parallels between the two decades, the concert will illuminate our enduring humanity and the shared responses to one another and the world around us.
Compositions range from the 1920s to 2020s, including works by Irving Berlin and supporting text from EE Cummings, Langston Hughes, and Carl Sandburg. Modern day composers include Stuart Beatch, Marjorie Halloran, Anuj Bhutani, Joel Thompson and more.
The Jazz Troubadours, a trio of local musicians, will join the concert in support of the ensemble and for a special, live improvisation moment.
Don't miss this unique concert! Join us Feb. 6th and 7th to experience the ephemeral nature of emergent, experimental art together as a community.
