Winter is a challenging time for birds, and it’s the perfect season for young naturalists to explore how our feathered friends survive the cold! This hands-on class is designed for K–2nd grade explorers and combines outdoor discovery, science, and creativity.
Kids will:
Learn to identify common North Carolina winter birds and discover which birds migrate and which stay.
Practice backyard birding skills during a guided winter hike, listening for calls and spotting birds in their habitats.
Participate in the Flying WILD-inspired “Fill the Beak” activity, exploring how different bird beaks are adapted to seeds, insects, fruit, and nectar.
Make a peanut butter bird feeder to take home and support local birds throughout the winter.
