About the tutors:
WILLIAM CONNOR
William Connor studied German, English literature, and Theatre at Victoria University in Welling-ton, where he completed his Master’s in creative writing in 2016. He lives between Berlin and Greytown, and works as a teacher, translator, editor, writer, and puppeteer. He has published numerous poems and short stories in several anthologies and journals, has written and per-formed in a number of plays that have toured New Zealand and Germany, and is the writer and cocreator of the intercultural comedy web-series Lifeswap, which explores and celebrates the differences between the German and New Zealand cultures.
STEFFEN KREFT
Steffen Kreft is an animation film director, illustrator, marionette maker and puppeteer. He was born in Münster, Germany and is currently living in Greytown in the Wairarapa.
When he first moved to New Zealand in 2007, he did his Masters in design at Massey University and co-founded the animation company National Park Studios in 2010. He taught design, animation and puppet making at Massey University and The Learning Connexion. In 2012, he directed and organised the Greytown Arts Festival and directed and made marionettes for the award winning adult puppet show “The Kitchen at the End of the World”. In 2014, Steffen and his partner William moved to Berlin for a few years where they started the popular animated web series Lifeswap about the cultural differences between New Zealand and Germany.
Now, he spends his time making short films for organisations like the French/German TV channel Arte, several New Zealand ministries, German museums and start-up companies or creates giant puppets and mesmerising marionette shows for festivals. He is also building a beautiful tiny house on wheels – apparently his most creatively challenging as well as satisfying project yet.
He has a passion for making things with his hands and while his projects are so varied, he can be very proud of the attention to detail that is obvious in all of his work.
