Spend a joyful day in the studio with ceramicist Pascale Wilson, learning how to create your own expressive sgraffito mask.
Sgraffito is a pottery decorating technique where you paint coloured slip onto clay, then gently scratch it away or you carve through it to create bold lines and patterns, revealing the clay below and giving your piece real texture and character.
You’ll start by getting hands-on with clay; pinching, coiling and shaping the foundations of a small wall mask. Pascale will guide you through the simple techniques that help the form come to life, then you’ll begin sculpting the features: human, animal, something playful and hybrid, or completely abstract. This is your chance to explore character and imagination in three dimensions.
Once your mask has its shape, you’ll bring it to life with colour and pattern. Using coloured slips and sgraffito tools, you’ll carve into the surface to reveal bold lines, textures and details unique to your piece. It’s a wonderfully tactile process, calm, absorbing, and full of creative possibility.
By the end of the day, you’ll leave with new confidence in hand-building and sgraffito decoration, along with a mask that expresses your own style.
We’ll fire your finished piece in our electric kilns; please allow up to six weeks before collection.
