About the event

Cirencester on the Map: History, Cartography and Sense of Place?
The eminent historian of cartography, J. B. Harley, introduced the concept of the ‘map as biography’ of a place or landscape, but also of people; both those that made the map and as an autobiographic document that holds meaning for people who have occupied a place.

In this talk, Peter Vujakovic, Emeritus Professor of Geography, Canterbury Christ Church University and Visiting Professor at the Royal Agricultural University, introduces Harley’s ideas in the context of Cirencester and its surrounds, with reference to various layers of history from the Iron Age and Roman occupation to the Victorian era.
