About the event

Webb-Pearce Quartet
The Webb–Pearce Quartet brings an evening of original music to the 03 Sessions. Led by guitarist Heather Webb and trumpeter Cameron Pearce, with Michael Story (bass) and Joseph McCallum (drums), the group explores sound with openness and lyricism. Expect magnetic grooves, lyrical melodies, and spontaneous interplay that balance precision with freedom. This is jazz that’s adventurous and alive, yet grounded in warmth and connection.

Heather Webb is a guitarist, composer, and educator based in Ōtautahi, Aotearoa. A versatile and sought-after musician, she has worked extensively as a bandleader, sideman, session musician, and film composer, spanning jazz, theatre, and experimental music.

As the leader of Parallax, Webb explores the intersection of jazz and astrophysics, crafting compositions that blend scientific and musical inquiry. Her performances have been praised as “an engaging blend of scientific and musical nerdery,” with one reviewer noting, “Webb offers fascinating context in her introductions, invites the room into her enthusiasms, ... leaves the audience wanting more.”

She performs regularly with a range of artists, including Delaney Davidson, Merk, Rutene Spooner, Terrible Sons, Darren Pickering Small Worlds, and Motte, and has appeared at major jazz and arts festivals across Aotearoa. In 2021, she was named among RNZ’s Top Women in Jazz.

Webb’s compositions have received critical acclaim, with her work on Shiko (Rattle Records) featured in RNZ’s Best of NZ Jazz list. Graham Reid described her music as “evocatively atmospheric,” highlighting its “leisurely confidence which is both gentle but often on the precipice of unresolved tension. It’s a standout.”

She holds a Bachelor of Music (Hons) and Master of Creative Practice, and tutors guitar at the University of Canterbury.

Cameron Pearce

Equally at home playing jazz, classical, or pop, Cameron is regularly in demand as a performer. A member of the Christchurch Symphony since 1995 and a founding member of the Symposium Jazz Orchestra (circa 2007), he is a regular 'first call' for pit orchestras and recording sessions in Christchurch. He has also performed with, composed and arranged music for an impressive range of high-profile international and local artists and theatre companies.

Cameron joined the teaching staff at Ara Music Arts in 1998 and has lectured across many core subjects, specialising in Jazz Theory, Jazz Arranging & Composition and trumpet studies. He holds a Bachelor of Musical Arts from the Ara Institute of Canterbury and a Master of Arts from the Aaron Copland School of Music, City University of New York (USA). His book, “Modern Etudes for Solo Trumpet”, was recently published by Sher Music.
