The New Zealand Antarctic Society and the University of Canterbury School of Earth and Environment are proud to co-host an exciting seminar:
Explore a side of Antarctica you’ve never seen before. Join us for a special presentation, “Not a Mission, But a Home: Growing Up at Esperanza Base, Antarctica”. This event, led by frontline humanitarian Linda Cruse, delves into the lives of children at Esperanza Base, the only civilian settlement on the Antarctic mainland.
Discover how these children, who see the continent not as a mission but as their home, are inspiring a global youth movement to protect our planet. You’ll learn about their unique daily lives, from living with limited power and food shortages to walking to school tied together with ropes to avoid being blown away by the winds. For them, climate change is not a theory; it’s a reality they observe daily.
This presentation will also introduce you to the Polar Race4Good, an initiative that connects youth from Antarctica with their peers in Qaanaaq, Greenland to create a human-centered call for climate action. The event will explore whether these young polar voices can bridge the gap between scientific insight and global action.
Join remotely: If you can't make it in person, we are going to try to make this talk available by zoom:
