In partnership with Victoria Djembe Academy, Affinity is thrilled to present Moribayassa: Women Overcoming Obstacles through the Power of the Djembe, a free, drumming workshop rooted in cultural education and rhythmic healing, on Thursday, August 28, from 6:30-8:00pm at Affinity Community Services.
The featured rhythm, Moribayassa- from the Malinke ethnic group of Guinea, West Africa- is a celebratory rhythm traditionally played when a woman overcomes great adversity or hardship. This rhythm is about resilience, renewal, and rejoicing—a powerful message that transcends culture and speaks to all communities.
Accessibility: This interactive workshop is inclusive of people with disabilities and designed for all ability levels- no prior drumming experience necessary. We recommend that participants with audio sensitivity bring noise-reducing or noise-canceling headphones.
Materials: Twelve drums will be provided, and attendees are also invited to bring their own. No worries if the number of participants exceeds the number of drums, as everyone will have the opportunity to participate in the workshop. Sharing is caring, after all!
Instructor: Victoria Boateng, a professional drummer, teaching artist, and autism self-advocate, uses rhythm to build community, confidence, and cultural pride. She is a member of Ayodele Drum and Dance and the founder of Victoria Djembe Academy, which offers inclusive drum workshops to people of all abilities across Chicago and beyond.
We look forward to drumming with you on Thursday, August 28!
