“Dear Steve . . . it’s Allie,” a theatrical autobiography featuring Allie n Steve Mullen, is scheduled for it’s premiere public performance at the Steppenwolf 1700 Theater in Chicago, IL on August 8th and 9th, 2025, at 8:00 pm.
Conceived as a narrative concert, the piece is a love song to small town America from a radical leftist, trans-feminine, cosmopolitan snowflake. In a performance that is both traditional and high tech, Allie plays the piano and mountain dulcimer, weaving in historic field recordings, electronic music and symphonic samples, as she sings, tells stories, and talks to her younger self - Steve - about the heartland boy and devoted father she watched from a distance, and the life she now lives as a trans composer and artist.
When Allie's evangelical cousin invites her to come back to her hometown and go to church with him, Allie takes the opportunity to talk to Steve ~ on the long drive to his boyhood home ~ about the things she knows he was unable to see, and the unseen forces that have shaped them both.
The piece has been described by preview audience members as “a movie for my ears,” (Jane / student) “an attempt to find home among the people and places that shaped you,” (Alannah / artist) and as “the unwrapping of self, culture, and history through music.” (Dan / filmmaker)
There will be an opportunity to talk with the artist and their collaborators, and to ask questions after each performance.
“Dear Steve . . . it’s Allie” is presented as part of Steppenwolf’s LookOut Series.
