Jason Roebke - bass
Together, they steer a restless sonic narrative, shifting moods and colors in real time. The result is a brilliant exploration into improvisational soundscapes, unfolding as a cohesive yet spontaneous ensemble statement —both organic and tightly interconnected.
Jason Adasiewicz, vibraphonist, drummer, and composer, Jason Adasiewicz is an integral member of Chicago’s jazz and improvised music community and is the leader of the critically acclaimed trio Sun Rooms and quintet Rolldown. For the last 15 years Adasiewicz has brought his aggressive yet lyrical style to over 10 working groups, including Mike Reed’s Loose Assembly, Peter Brotzmann:Jason Adasiewicz Duo, Nicole Mitchell’s Ice Crystals, Josh Berman and His Gang, Ingebrigt Häker Flaten Chicago Sextet, James Falzone’s Klang, Rob Mazurek’s Starlicker and Ken Vandermark’s Topology and Midwest School. Adasiewicz performs frequently in Europe and is a member of groups lead by Peter Brotzmann, Eric Boeren and Mats Gustafsson. Adasiewicz won the 2011 Downbeat Annual Critic’s Poll in the Rising Star Vibes category, and for the last 5 years has placed in the Vibes category. Sun Rooms features Adasiewicz, Mike Reed, and Nate McBride. The Chicago group formed in 2008, first experimenting as a free improvising trio, and later focused attention on arranging tunes that Adasiewicz wrote during his wife’s first pregnancy in the summer of 2009. Delmark Records released the band’s debut record in 2010, Sun Rooms. The critical attention that Sun Rooms received includes: The New York Times Ben Ratliff's Top 10 Pop and Jazz Records of 2010, The Village Voice Top 50 Jazz Records of 2010, The Chicago Tribune Howard Reich's Top 10 Jazz Records of 2010, The Chicago Reader Peter Margasak's Top Albums of 2010, Dusted Magazine Derek Taylor's Top Jazz Records of 2010. Spacer is Sun Rooms second record, and was released in 2011 on Delmark. Spacer was written in the winter of 2011 and slowly shaped through a month long residency at a north side Chicago bar, The Whistler. Spacer was chosen by the Chicago Tribune as a Top 10 Jazz Record of 2011. Adasiewicz and Mike Reed lead the large group Living by Lanterns, which brings together an incandescent cast of Chicago and New York improvisers to explore music inspired by a previously unknown recording of Sun Ra. Their record New Myth/Old Science (Cuneiform Records, 2012) was chosen by the Los Angles Times as a Top 10 Jazz Record of 2012, and Magnet Magazine Best of 2012: Jazz/Improv. Adasiewicz’s quintet Rolldown, with Josh Berman, Aram Shelton, Jason Roebke, and Frank Rosaly, formed in 2004 and have released two records, Rolldown (482 Music, 2008) and Varmint (Cuneiform Records, 2009). The Peter Brotzmann:Jason Adasiewicz Duo was chosen by the New York Times as one of the Top 10 Concert Highs of 2011. Their record Going All Fancy (Bro/Eremite, 2012) was chosen by Spin Magazine as one of the 20 Best Avant Albums of 2012, and Magnet Magazine Best of 2012: Jazz/Improv. Starlicker (with Rob Mazurek and John Herndon) Double Demon (Delmark 2011) was named by the New York Times as a Top 10 Pop and Jazz Record of 2011 and the Los Angles Times as a Top 10 Jazz Record of 2011.

Jason Roebke, double bass. The diversity of Jason Roebke’s musical associations make him one of the most sought after bassists, composers, and educators in Chicago and beyond. He composes music that is extreme in its pairing of silence and explosive gestures. His music is rooted in jazz and takes inspiration from experimental music, noise, and improvisation. Solo performance and a duo with dancer Ayako Kato are also at the forefront of his creative activities. As a double bassist, his playing is intensely physical, audacious, and sparse. The Chicago Reader described his work as “a carefully orchestrated rummage through a hardware store.” Roebke studied privately with saxophonist and composer Roscoe Mitchell as well as legendary double bass pedagogue Stuart Sankey. In 2009, he was awarded the Fellowship in Music Composition from the Illinois Arts Council. Roebke tours widely in the US and Europe.
