Out of the Shadows: The Forgotten Spanish Page of Wyoming's History

In the 1920s, hundreds of Mexican and Mexican American families—known as Betabeleros—journeyed to Wyoming each year to work in the sugar beet fields. In 1927, they found something unexpected: La Página en Español, a short-lived Spanish-language page in the Powell Tribune that celebrated their community while subtly reinforcing the rules of the fields.
Join Dr. Chelsea Escalante as she uncovers this remarkable piece of Wyoming history—a story of resilience, culture, and the complex balance between hospitality and control.
Special bonus: After the talk, meet artist Ismael Dominguez, creator of the library’s current exhibit Migración: Betabeleros, and explore his stunning installation chronicling the history of migrant beet workers through textile sculptures, historic photos, and first-hand stories.
This evening offers a unique chance to experience history through both scholarship and art.
