A roasted whole ox, prepared overnight by volunteers from The Houghton Feast Trust, will be served up in sandwiches in the grounds of The Old Rectory, near The Broadway, where the first oxen were roasted by Rector Bernard Gilpin to feed Houghton’s poor in the 16th century.
The ceremonial first slice of beef will be presented to the Right worshipful, the Mayor of Sunderland, Coun. Ehthesham Haque, at 1 o’clock ahead of the tasty sandwiches going on sale to the public.
The sarnies are very popular and are therefore available strictly while stocks last (last year they sold out by 5pm). You can pre-purchase your beef sandwiches online at: www.oxsarnies.com
