Sgraffito is a pottery decoration technique that dates back to the tenth century and is still used today! The word sgraffito comes from the Italian for "scratched" and that is exactly how you will create your design on your trinket dish; layers of colourful underglaze will be scratched away to create white lines and patterns.
In this two hour workshop you will be provided with 3 leather-hard ceramic disks (this means it's clay that hasn't been fired) that have been painted with black underglaze. You will then use a variety of tools to scrape through the layers of underglaze to create your pattern.
At the end of the workshop your finished piece will be fired and glazed and ready to collect from Hazlehurst Studios within 10 days.
When your 3 disks are glazed and fired they can be used as coasters, decorative tiles or as hanging ornaments.
This workshop is open to all ages, anyone who can hold a pencil can do sgraffito! As the tools used can be sharp, however, we do recommend that you use your discretion in deciding whether your child is old enough to use the tools themselves.
