Brahms Violin Concerto
Schubert Symphony No. 4
Conductor: Simon Walton
Violin: Ruth Schulten
For our first concert of the 2025-2026 Season, Chiltern Camerata are venturing out to the lovely church of St Mary’s in Chesham to perform a romantic programme of music by two of Germany’s greatest composers.
Schubert wrote his 4th Symphony in C Minor when he was only 19 years old and later called it the 'Tragic' Symphony. It is not known why, though it is one of only two symphonies he wrote in a minor key. The beautiful A flat major slow movement provides some lyrical calmness to an otherwise rather turbulent symphony.
Brahms' Violin Concerto in D is a favourite among concert-goers, and for good reason. Its beautiful melodies, spectacular technical virtuosity, and lively Hungarian-style themes and cross-rhythms will keep you on the edge of your seat right to the final flourish!
Our soloist, Ruth Schulten, is well known in the area and you may remember her wonderful performance of Beethoven’s violin concerto a few years ago with the Chiltern Camerata, as well as the Brahms Double Concerto last season. We are delighted to welcome her back to perform the Brahms Violin Concerto in this October concert.
