October Program: Birds of Nachusa Grasslands with Susan Kleiman

Note: The program begins at 6:30 p.m., come at 6:00 p.m. for social time.

Susan Kleiman's presentation will highlight some of the 245 species of birds that breed, winter, and stop-over at The Nature Conservancy's Nachusa Grasslands preserve. The way the preserve is managed to help birds will be covered: through fire, grazing, tree thinning, and increasing habitat through restoration of farm fields. Hear some of the success stories and worries. There will also be time to answer questions.

Susan considers herself a naturalist. Since she was quite young, Susan was drawn towards animals and nature. She holds a bachelor’s degree in forestry and wildlife management, as well as a master’s degree in environmental education and interpretation. Before coming to Illinois, Susan worked in 12 states doing environmental education. She has been working and volunteering at Nachusa for three decades, engaged in many aspects of restoration, education, and monitoring birds and frogs.
