About the event

Tommy Scott Trio: Homage to McCoy Tyner at Smokey Joes (Cheltenham) Tuesday 7th October
We are very excited to welcome the incredible pianist, Tommy Scott, back to Smokey Joe’s. Tommy is based in Paris now, and it’s rare to be able to bring Tommy back to Cheltenham, but we’ve done it! Back on home turf, this is a brilliant opportunity to catch up with Tommy, see how the amazing French musicians he’s been playing with have moved Tommy’s playing into the next dimension!

We’ve invited Tommy to perform in his favourite trio format, and he’ll be joined by the awesome Mike Green on double bass and the exuberant Mike Cypher on drums. Tommy is bringing a brand new project to Smokey Joe’s, his personal homage to the legendary pianist, McCoy Tyner, celebrated for his incredible mastery of jazz piano, a key innovator in the history of jazz, and deeply connected to the incredible music he created with the John Coltrane Quartet. We can’t wait to see Tommy’s personal take on the musical life of McCoy Tyner.

Tommy studied at a young age with the legendary pianist, Jason Rebello (Sting, Jeff Beck). Encouraged by mentors Joey Calderazzo (Branford Marsalis) and Danilo Perez (Wayne Shorter), Tommy gained a reputation as a prodigious jazz pianist in the UK. Over the years, Tommy has matured into a unique, creative and emotionally evocative musical artist. His musical language draws on the symphonic spirit of Sibelius, the soulful funk and blues of Herbie Hancock, the explorations of Wayne Shorter, the jazz rock drive of McCoy Tyner, and the Latin inflections of Danilo Pérez. Tommy has toured widely across the Europe, as bandleader and sideman, sharing stages and studios with artists including Jean Toussaint, Brandon Allen, Gene Calderazzo, Alex Hitchcock, Karl Vanden Bossche, Misha Mullov Abbado, Damon Brown, Dave O’Higgins, Quentin Collins, Rob Luft, Tom Ollendorff, Paul Booth, David Sausay, Benjamin Henocq, Pierre Marcus, Jesus Vega, and Gaël Horellou. We can’t wait for this gig! Tommy is back in town!
