In our partnership with Roving Picture Shows, we present Charlie Chaplin's second great movie "A Woman of Paris" - featuring a live score by Laurie Forsyth.
Written and directed by Charlie Chaplin, this is one of only two films he made in which he does not play the lead, though he makes a brief cameo. Having built his career as both an actor and director of silent cinema with comedic short films starring his wildly popular Little Tramp character, Charles Chaplin confounded audiences when he followed up his first feature, The Kid, with a serious melodrama—sans the Tramp! A major departure from his previous output.
The film stars Edna Purviance as Marie, a young village woman who moves to Paris after a broken engagement, becomes the mistress of a wealthy man, and later faces love and heartbreak when reunited with her former fiancé.
“I have tried to make a story of life as I see it — a life that is not composed of heroes and villains, but of men and women with all their passion” (Charlie Chaplin)
Applauded by critics at its release but rejected by the public, A Woman of Paris has since been recognized as one of his greatest directorial achievements. With its influential, understated performances and masterful storytelling, the film stands today as a landmark of cinematic art.
