On October 1, the South Carolina Senate Medical Affairs Subcommittee will hear testimony on Senate Bill 323, the so-called “Unborn Child Protection Act.” If passed, this bill would be one of the most extreme abortion bans in the nation.
S. 323 eliminates existing exceptions for rape, incest, and fatal fetal diagnoses, threatens doctors with decades in Pr*son and loss of licenses for providing care, and even opens the door for patients to be prosecuted for homicide, punishable by the death penalty. It also criminalizes sharing information, resources, or support, isolating people when they need help most.
This is a direct attack on the health, dignity, and freedom of South Carolinians.
Join us at Itinerant Literate Books on Saturday, September 27 after the Feminist Magic Market for a digital community write-in campaign (BYOD - Bring Your Own Device). We’ll provide WiFi, sample language, and key legislative facts so you can send your testimony directly to the Senate Medical Affairs Committee before the September 29 deadline.
Testimony will be emailed to: c21lZGljb21tIHwgc2NzZW5hdGUgISBnb3Y= (with “S. 323” in the subject line).
If you can't make the event itself, check the "Downloads" section below for guidance, templates, and the current bill and proposed changes.
Lawmakers need to hear from us now. This bill would force people to carry pregnancies against their will, worsen already dire maternal health outcomes in South Carolina, and criminalize doctors and patients for seeking or providing life-saving care.
Come write, resist, and raise your voice. Together, we can urge lawmakers to reject S. 323
