Workshop Description: Are you an actor who has been asked to engage in a violent scene onstage and had no clue how to do so? Have you ever wondered how professional actors fight onstage and not injure their friends? Then this is the workshop for you! Come and learn the basics of unarmed combat. In this workshop, we will focus on stage slaps, punches, kicks, and more. Let’s pretend to beat up our friends and look really cool while doing it!
Instructor: Liz Odom-Dalton
Liz Odom-Dalton is an Associate Instructor with Dueling Arts International, as well as a Co-Founder of the Louisiana Shakespeare Company and their Head of Combat. Liz attended her first workshop with Dueling Arts International in 2016 and has been hooked ever since. In addition to a love of all things Stage Combat, Liz has a preference for working behind the scenes in many theatrical positions such as Directing, Stage Managing, and recently has begun to learn the skill of Theatrical Intimacy Choreography. Luckily, her other passion of Shakespeare blends easily with Stage Combat, and has been growing steadily with the Louisiana Shakespeare Company. Liz's greatest joy, however, is any time she gets to teach and introduce others to the skills and concepts of Stage Combat and other theatrical crafts. She has often said she is addicted to seeing the "ah-ha!" moment in others, which has given Liz a drive for education and learning.
When not working on various shows with local community theatres or with schools, Liz enjoys spending the little free time she has with friends playing collaborative improv story games with shiny math rocks, as well as annoying her husband and three cats.
Outside of the Columbia, she is a theatre artist and educator who has directed, acted, and hosted a wide range of workshops for various theatres in southeastern Louisiana. She is certified in various stage combat weapon systems through Dueling Arts International and frequently trains with both DAI and the Society of American Fight Directors. Since 2020, she has taught both English and Theatre in the classroom. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in English Education from Southeastern Louisiana University and a Master of Fine Arts in Theatre Education from the Mississippi University for Women.
Tickets are $20/person; workshop is limited to 15 people.
