Beyond Access: Elevating Transfer Pathways to Iowa's Private Institutions

Join us at Kirkwood Community College in beautiful Iowa Hall for the second IPTC symposium focused on enhancing transfer pathways from Iowa's community colleges to our private colleges and universities. Transfer advisors, faculty, registrars, financial aid directors, and others will share best practices and strategies to support students who choose to transfer to Iowa's private colleges. The symposium is structured to encourage significant interaction with peers and to meet new colleagues from our private colleges and universities and community colleges. A partial list of the presentations and panels is listed below.



Agenda

Comprehensive Transfer Initiatives: Engaging Students, Faculty, and Staff

Info: Faculty and staff from Loras College will share the details and initial outcomes of a series of comprehensive transfer initiatives Loras College implemented during the 24-25 academic year designed to support the academic and co-curricular transition of transfer students.


The Value of Using Transfer Majors as a Faculty Advising Tool

Info: A panel of faculty members who have implemented transfer majors in their disciplines will share how they use these documents as a tool to support academic planning for transfer students.


Creating a Meaningful and Effective Community College Visit

Info: A panel of advising directors and advisors from Iowa's community colleges will share strategies and advice for transfer advisors from our private colleges and universities that support a meaningful and effective campus visit day.


Strategies for College Leaders to Support Transfer Policies and Practices

Info: This session will focus on the importance of support of transfer initiatives from leadership teams at community colleges and private colleges and universities. Strategies and tools to support transfer teams and students will be shared with participants.


Proven Practices in Supporting Transfer Students: Minnesota Successes

Info: The Minnesota Transfer Initiative is completing its 3-year transfer grant with their private colleges and universities and community colleges. This sessions will focus on proven best practices to support transfer students during and after matriculation.


Private Colleges Are Affordable! Resources for Students and Families

Info: Most potential transfer students don't believe they can afford a private college education. A panel of Financial Aid Directors from Iowa's private colleges will share information and resources that demonstrate the affordability of a private college education and will assist students and families as they navigate myriad financial aid opportunities.


Creating an Interdepartmental Team to Support Transfer Students

Info: Wartburg College has created an interdepartmental team to support transfer students from recruitment through graduation. The team will share their practices and policies that are designed to ensure that students are provided support throughout their transfer journey.


STEAM Transfer Majors: Navigating Complex Majors Through Collaborations

Info: Kirkwood Community College has worked with their private college partners to create transfer majors that support seamless articulation in selected STEAM majors. A panel of faculty and advisors will share the best practices they have developed that support the goals of transfer students in complex majors.
