Tidewater Traditions: Ancient Coastal Harvesting Experience

Expert coastal naturalists will guide you through the ancient art of clam digging at low tide, teaching you to read the subtle signs of buried shellfish and use time-honored hand-harvesting methods that respect marine habitats. Discover the rich diversity of edible seaweeds along our shoreline while learning sustainable collection practices and their historical significance in coastal cuisines.

• Participants will gain hands-on experience in:
• Traditional clam raking and digging techniques
• Setting and harvesting crab pots
• Throwing shrimp nets
• Identifying safe, edible seaweed varieties and their nutritional benefits
• Understanding tidal patterns and their influence on coastal harvesting
• Preparing and preserving your coastal harvest using both historical and modern methods

Harvesting tools and materials will be provided on-site. Feel free to bring personal equipment if available.

This experience emphasizes conservation ethics and the cultural heritage of North Carolina's coastal communities. All harvesting activities follow strict sustainability guidelines to protect our marine ecosystems.

IMPORTANT: All participants must possess valid NC coastal fishing licenses. Licenses must be obtained prior to the event and presented at check-in. Please familiarize yourself with current size and quantity regulations.

IMPORTANT: All participants are recommended to be at least 16 years of age

Bring appropriate aquatic footwear, sun protection, and a spirit of adventure as we connect with the timeless rhythms of coastal foraging!

Participants are advised to bring breakfast, lunch, and sufficient water. Dinner will be provided and prepared using ingrediants sourced during the event.
