Explore 15 miles of this small, spring fed stream in Northwest Georgia over two days. Appreciate the fascinating history of nearby communities, including Chubbtown, a community of free Blacks dating to before the Civil War, and Cave Spring, home to the restored Fairview-Brown School, a rural Black school dating to the 1920s.
On Saturday, July 26, we’ll run the five miles from Lyons Bridge to Cedar Creek RV and Outdoor Center, and then on Sunday, July 27, we’ll launch from the Outdoor Center and explore the final 10 miles of the creek as it makes its way to its confluence with the Coosa River just this side of the Georgia-Alabama state line. A short paddle on Saturday will enable us to take in the other sites in nearby Cave Spring, including the iconic limestone cave (with accompanying spring that produces two million gallons a day); the Vann Cherokee Cabin, dating to the early 1800s and considered one of the oldest Native American residences in Georgia; the Fairview-Brown School, a Rosenwald-endowed school for rural Blacks that operated from 1924 to 1968; and nearby historic Chubbtown, a community of free Blacks established shortly before the Civil War.
This trip highlights one of the many small streams that is at risk of being closed to the public if Georgia legislators adopt a narrow view of where the public has a right to access and pass down Georgia’s small streams.
Participants must provide their own accommodations and meals for this weekend adventure. For campers, we recommend reserving a site at Big Cedar Creek RV and Outdoor Center. Lodging is also available in nearby Cave Spring and Rome. Registration fees include guide services, maps and shuttle services. Rental boats may be reserved during registration.
SKILL LEVEL REQUIRED–The trip is mostly flatwater with some Class I shoals. Some canoeing or kayaking experience is recommended.
