Lives in Tunisia
Gouider Triki is a Tunisian engraver and painter who enrolled at the École nationale des beaux-arts in Paris, after having studied previously at the École des beaux-arts in Tunis. An artist who eventually withdrew to farming and livestock, he continued to dedicate his time to painting and engraving. Triki was influenced by Expressionist artists’ technique of using a blend of earthy and vibrant colours to convey a wide range of emotions, as well as by the Surrealist artists’ quest to explore the human mind beyond rational thought, diving into the unconscious. His work is filled with signs and mystical symbols where mythologies, folk tales, and literature are constantly interwoven through implicit arrangements and allegories. These elements appear as phantoms, spectres, perched animals, and zoomorphic creatures that amass on his canvas, floating with ease and untamed, but never in chaos. They undulate within imaginary landscapes. Triki’s works are organized around two primary visual components: one composed of intricate, pattern-like compositions, and the other defined by curved, flowing lines. Together, these structures seem to represent different aspects of the cosmos, with the pattern-based arrangements covering the canvas in dense, detailed clusters, creating a sense of controlled disorder.
Triki’s work has been widely exhibited nationally and internationally since the mid-1960s, including at the Musee d’Art Moderne de Paris, Centre Pompidou and the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris. He was awarded the Presidential Prize of Tunisia in Painting.
