About the event

Macbeth
Flabbergast Theatre’s
MACBETH

In this classic tale of greed and guilt, Flabbergast’s Macbeth fuses a rigorous and respectful approach to text and storytelling to bring a magical, lucid interpretation of Shakespeare’s blood-soaked tragedy to life.

Playing to their strengths and background in puppetry, clown, mask, ensemble and physical theatre, Flabbergast have developed their first narrative text based production (after extensive R&D with Wilton’s Music Hall London and Grotowski Institute Poland). They present the bard’s original text accompanied by and supported with exhilarating live music to produce a provocative and enjoyably accessible show.

The beautifully performed music and vocal work combine into a powerful live soundscape creating an atmosphere that both compliments and juxtaposes the action. With a stripped back set, and an aesthetically arresting design, the tightknit ensemble of actors performs a dark and visceral manifestation of the work’s essence and underlaying themes.

Flabbergast gives us an instinctive interpretation of Shakespeare’s most wretched tragedy, working to draw out the parallels with modern society. At its heart, the dominant recurring theme and fundamental narrative that powers The Tragedy of Macbeth is the masculine fear of feminine power; and in this sense, the play is as pertinent today as it has ever been.

This timeless work examines what it meant to be a man, and what it meant to be a woman and underscores the social contracts between the two that dictate the actions of the protagonists. The notion that gender is a social construct, is never more clear than during Lady Macbeth’s “unsex me here” soliloquy, as she fights to set aside her feminine role, lest it hinder her dark ambitions. And the witches – who can appear as crones or maids – embody the power which threatened the patriarchal establishment.

A performance for both new and established theatregoers to enjoy, Flabbergast’s Shakespeare is for everyone, a visceral and eloquent retelling of Shakespeare’s imbrued tale of vicissitude.

★★★★ “Is as captivating as it is unsettling.” The Telegraph

★★★★★ “This is an exciting and vital interpretation of Macbeth which serves to invigorate one of Shakespeare’s best-known plays with a new intensity.” British Theatre Guide

*******************************
Yn y stori glasurol hon o drychwant ac euogrwydd, mae Macbeth gan Theatr Flabbergast yn cyfuno ymagwedd drylwyr a pharchus at destun ac adrodd stori i ddod â dehongliad hudolus, clir o drasiedi waedlyd Shakespeare yn fyw.

Gan chwarae i'w cryfderau a'u cefndir mewn pypedwaith, clowniau, masgiau, ensemble a theatr gorfforol, mae Flabbergast wedi datblygu eu cynhyrchiad cyntaf sy'n seiliedig ar destunau naratif (ar ôl ymchwil a datblygu helaeth gyda Wilton's Music Hall Llundain a Sefydliad Grotowski Gwlad Pwyl).

Maent yn cyflwyno testun gwreiddiol y bardd i gyfeiliant cerddoriaeth fyw gyffrous i gynhyrchu sioe bryfoclyd a hygyrch yn llawn mwynhad.

Mae'r gerddoriaeth a'r lleisio hyfryd yn creu awyrgylch pwerus sy'n ategu'r cyffro ac yn creu cyferbyniad. Gyda set syml, a dyluniad trawiadol cain, mae'r ensemble clos o actorion yn cyflwyno golwg dywyll a dwys o hanfod y gwaith a'i themâu gwaelodol.

Mae Flabbergast yn rhoi dehongliad greddfol i ni o drasiedi fwyaf truenus Shakespeare, gan amlygu'r tebygrwydd â chymdeithas fodern. Wrth wraidd y ddrama, y thema ailadroddus a'r naratif sylfaenol sy'n pweru The Tragedy of Macbeth yw'r ofn gwrywaidd o bŵer benywaidd; ac yn yr ystyr hwn, mae'r ddrama mor berthnasol heddiw ag y bu erioed.

Mae'r gwaith bythol hwn yn archwilio'r hyn yr oedd yn ei olygu i fod yn ddyn, a beth oedd yn ei olygu i fod yn fenyw ac mae'n tanlinellu'r contractau cymdeithasol rhwng y ddau sy'n pennu gweithredoedd y prif gymeriadau. Nid yw'r syniad bod rhywedd yn adeiladwaith cymdeithasol byth yn fwy clir nag yn ystod ymson "unsex me here" Lady Macbeth, wrth iddi frwydro i roi o'r neilltu ei rôl fenywaidd, rhag iddi rwystro ei huchelgeisiau tywyll. Ac mae'r gwrachod – sy'n gallu ymddangos fel hen wrachod neu forynion – yn ymgorffori'r pŵer a oedd yn bygwth y sefydliad patriarchaidd.

Fel dehongliad dwys a huawdl o stori waedlyd Shakespeare am droeon bywyd, mae'r cynhyrchiad hwn gan Flabbergast yn addas i bawb, boed yn newydd i'r theatr neu sy'n ymwelwyr cyson.
