Level 1 (Foundation) & Level 2 (Scented Retrieve)
Our Hunt & Retrieve Trials are designed to test searching, hunting drive, retrieving, and teamwork in a supportive, confidence-building environment.
This event includes two levels, so teams can enter at the stage that suits them best.
Whether you’re stepping into your first trial or progressing to scented retrieves, this day is about learning, clarity, and having a great go.

🐾 Level 1 – Foundation Trial
Toy or Article Retrieve
A beginner-friendly introduction to trial environments, ideal for dogs new to Hunt & Retrieve or competition-style setups.
What to Expect
• Two search areas, each with one hidden item
• Search areas vary in layout and surface to reflect real-life conditions
• Dogs may work off-lead or on a long line
Your dog will:
• Search independently
• Locate the hidden item
• Retrieve and return it
• Show enthusiasm, confidence, and teamwork
Scoring (per search – 25 points + 5 bonus)
• Find – 5
• Retrieve action – 10
• Attempted retrieve – 5
• Enthusiasm – 5
• Dog–handler relationship – 5
• Bonus: Delivery to hand – 5
This level is low pressure and supportive, with plenty of feedback and encouragement. Learning is celebrated just as much as success.

🐾 Level 2 – Scented Retrieve Trial
Target Odour: Catnip
A clear progression from Level 1, introducing a specific scent target to build accuracy, commitment, and scent discipline.
Overview
• Two searches
• Each in a 30 × 30 metre area
• One catnip-scented hide per search
• Dogs may work off-lead or on a long line
• Combined scores determine final placings
• Time limit: 5 minutes per search
Training Focus
• Pairing the target odour (catnip) with the retrieve
• Scent handling and avoiding contamination
• Clear retrieve mechanics and confident delivery to hand
Scoring (per search – 40 points)
• Find – 10
• Retrieve action (to handler line) – 10
• Retrieve to hand – 10 (full) or 5 (partial)
• Dog–handler relationship – 5
• Enthusiasm – 5
Deduction:
• Dropping the item without attempting pickup: –5 points
This level rewards accuracy, consistency, and good handling decisions.
