Native American Women in Illinois History

The Clinton County Historical Society will host Kim Sigafus McIver, award winning Ojibwa author, on Saturday, November 15, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Case-Halstead Library in Carlyle. Kim will give a presentation titled, "Singing Bird and the Importance of Native American Women in Illinois History".

In this engaging program, Kim will uncover The Hidden Half, the powerful, often overlooked stories of Native American women in Illinois. You will meet figures such as Singing Bird, wife of the famous Black Hawk. You will also get a first hand look at what daily life was like for Native American women from courtship and marriage to motherhood and their essential role in family and tribal life.

The presentation is a history lesson as well as a hands-on journey. You will have an opportunity to try your hand at Native American instruments, learn to speak some Native American words, and enjoy a sing-along. Kim will give both adults and children a chance to connect to the Native American culture in a meaningful and memorable way.

Admission to this event is free and all ages are welcome.
