Fall Special Tour Series: The Shaker Experience of Nicholas Briggs

After forty years as a Shaker, in 1896 Nicholas Briggs decided to leave the community for the outside world.

Almost twenty-five years later, he published a memoir titled “Forty Years a Shaker” in the Granite State Monthly. This short serial has proven to be one of the most important accounts of life at Canterbury Shaker Village in the 19th century.

Join Director of Interpretation and Education Kyle Sandler as he explores the Village through the lens of Nicholas Briggs’s memoir, visiting many of the very same spots that Briggs describes in his first-person account.
