a play with spoken-word songs by Nigel Featherstone
music composed by Jay Cameron
something hidden can’t remain hidden for ever
Somewhere on the east coast of Australia, summer, mid-1980s: four teenagers, including three brothers, drown on a lake. Thirty years later, with the lake now dry, a father and son make a visit. Soon, along with two lakeside residents, they are embroiled in an unimaginable commemoration – and unburden themselves of the truth.
A play with spoken-word songs and music, The Story of the Oars is a bold new Australian theatrical work about the repercussions of telling the truth. It’s also an audacious exploration of Australian class, privilege, and the power of place to enchant, repel, and – ultimately – heal.
By award-winning writer Nigel Featherstone, with music written and performed by Jay Cameron, and directed by dramaturg, writer and filmmaker Shelly Higgs, The Story of the Oars is an evocative and intricate new theatrical work.
