About the event

I Should Have Been Dead Years Ago - Canberra screening

Screening on the brand new big screen at Pot Belly Pub.

A essential documentary on fringe dwelling outsider musician and artist Stuart Gray aka Stu Spasm from notorious 1980’s Sydney band Lubricated Goat who helped influence 90’s grunge and the underground rock scene of the last 30+ years.

Whether you are familiar with Stu or not this is a must see movie which documents not only the underground Australian rock music scene  but is a fascinating insight into the workings of an artist doing it all with no regard for conformity or commercialism.

Stu Spasm is the real deal.

Veteran drector Jason Summers (also responsible for the Dead Moon doco Unknown Passage) gives a warts and all look into Stu’s life from his fractured family life and beginnings in Adelaide through his time in Sydney’s alternative art and music scenes to his present time in New York where he has been living for the few decades.

Filmed over 20 years with a swag of archival footage Stu talks about his life in an open honest and unpretentious manner telling stories about being stabbed playing nude on national television scoring drugs for Kurt Cobain & Nick Cave amongst a backdrop of a life with no lack of struggles.

Musically Stu was involved in the Red Eye/ Black Eye ‘scene’ which included Tex Perkins Lachlan McLeod and Guy Maddison. He played in Salamander Jim The James Baker Experience amongst others.

Stu’s criminally underrated 90’s band Crunt featured Babes In Toyland bass player Kat Bjelland and John Spencer Blues Explosion drummer Russell Simins.

His current band The Art Gray Noizz Quartet recently released a split single with Brisbanes Gravel Samwidge (who are playing after the film screening).

As an artist Stu is responsible for a plethora of artwork including band posters and Lubricated Goat album covers.

He is also a sculpture artist and often takes time out from making his own false teeth (true story!) to make his creepy cult figurines of such people as Alice Cooper Suzi Quatro Charles Manson Rowland S. Howard and Leadbelly. His recent sculpture of Donald Trump can only be described as pure genius.

The movie screening is followed by a gig celebrating underground alternative Aussie rock music of today featuring Gravel Samwidge (Brisbane) The King Hits and Ape Rib (Wollongong).

Gig is ticketed separately.
