About
Following the 2024 NSW Drug Summit, this Beyond Punishment seminar will look at developments in drug policy and the role of Corrective Services in implementing the recommendations. The Summit reported ‘Treatment access in custody and post-release support were identified as critical gaps … that require particular attention and dedicated resources’. This seminar will consider successful Corrective Services policies around HIV and Hepatitis C, opioid substitution treatment, the Drug Court and compulsory treatment centres.
The Drug Summit also recommended more diversionary programs from the criminal justice system which may require Corrective Services to provide more treatment programs. The Drug Summit also recommended the government ‘strengthen enforcement of illicit drug supply, targeting suppliers’ which may lead to more convictions and longer sentences for drug sellers. The panel will also discuss the appropriate role for Corrective Services in enforcing long-term imprisonment of drug suppliers.
