This collection of 25 essays spans over 35 years of experiences living in and writing about Maine, capturing its lost, quirky, and hidden aspects. Michael will discuss the book’s inspiration, share excerpts, and explore the craft of writing creative nonfiction. Books will be available for purchase and signing and refreshments will be provided.

Michael is the author of The Art of the Myth: Maine Essays, a compelling collection of twenty-five essays that explore the richness of life in Maine—from county fairs and sea kayaking to fiddleheading with a man named Blood. His writing is a celebration of the “Other Maine,” a place of quiet beauty and deep-rooted stories that often go untold.

MICHAEL D. BURKE is a writer of nonfiction, whose work has appeared in national and international forums, from The New York Times and Boston Globe, to the Sunday Times (South Africa), and in Down East, Outside, Yankee, Islands, and A/B Architecture Boston. His subjects range from snow camping to sea kayaking, from country fairs in Maine to travels in Sardinia, Basilicata, Scotland, and South Africa. For more than 30 years, he was a whitewater and wilderness river guide, running rivers in California, Oregon, Idaho, Arizona, Mexico, and Alaska. Michael is also a playwright, having won the Maine Literary Arts Award for his play, The Town Meets, in 2018. He is Professor Emeritus of Creative Writing and English at Colby College, in Waterville, Maine, where he directed the Program in Creative Writing.

Michael lives in Wilton, Maine with his wife, the fiction writer Patricia O’Donnell.
