Jenni Lyn Cooper will lead a basket weaving workshop at Merryspring Nature Center on Saturday, December 6 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Learn the ancient art of natural basketry. Weave beautiful handmade baskets using daylily leaves and stems from Merryspring Nature Center’s very own special daylily gardens. You’ll learn, step-by-step, how to harvest, store, and prepare daylily and other various plant fibers to weave with. Using traditional techniques, you will learn the simple art of twining, make your own rope-like cordage, lovely baskets, sculptures, or even twine a snug nest around a favorite beach stone. Daylily leaves and stems are strong yet become silky soft to work with once prepared for weaving. Handling the fiber, connecting with nature can be grounding and calming, even contemplative, not to mention fun!
Come join Jenni Lyn from Bodhi-Time Basketry and discover the marvelous versatility of plant fiber in art, basketry, and sculpture. Jenni Lyn brings a lifetime of fiber art to the table, harvests wild fiber everywhere she goes, from cattail to papyrus, palm and philodendron, daylily and iris, tree bark, vines, even found objects and beach stones. She loves to share ideas and technique for creating vessels of all shapes and sizes. Her newest love is growing aromatic sweetgrass for next year’s basketmaking.
