Scary, hairy and with a great sense of smell, Giants were here first – born at the dawn of time from ice, rocks and night. Have these terrifying creatures gone, or are they biding their time … hidden amongst us, waiting to finish that most ancient blood feud against Gods and Men?

From Greek Zeus to Scandinavian Thor and from Cornwall’s Jack the Hammer to the northern Molly Whuppie, Gods and humans have waged a devastating series of single combats against large and grotesque beings with dubious manners.

In many myths the giants come first, often preceeding even the gods themselves, frequently waiting for the human explorers of new lands. Often a force of oppression, representing the tyrany of might, some have their beginnings in the power of nature, some in actual people who have been exagerated over the years and some we can only guess at.

Master storyteller The Travelling Talesman brings a selection of outsized tales to life and muses on the origins of one of our most enduring monsters.
