Chalk & Paper Landscapes: Floor plans in Relief Free Workshop

Free workshop using architectural floor plans and site maps as a starting point, exploring how buildings, land, and community spaces are built and their relationship to the chalk landscapes. We’ll translate these plans into layered paper relief artworks, working in both 2D and 3D to explore depth, form, and texture.

Using locally sourced chalk and textured papers, you’ll create your own tactile 'mini-landscapes' that connect architectural thinking with natural strata and ridge lines.

• Study floor plans, site layouts, and blueprint drawings as visual language
• Create our own architectural floor plans inspired by the surrounding historic landscape
• Transform these plans into textural paper reliefs, building height, shape, and depth
• Use chalk and paper to highlight edges, layers, and elevation — echoing chalk pits and landforms
• Mix and paint with homemade chalk paint using locally sourced chalk
• Discuss how community, nature, design and shape shared spaces including future raised bed designs at the former flats on Fanshawe Road.

This session blends architecture, landscape studies, and creative exploration. You’ll leave with a unique relief artwork and a new way of 'reading' both buildings and terrain.

No art experience required, just curiosity. All materials provided.

This workshop is a free public session delivered as part of In Every Piece of Land, the Soil Has a Memory by artists Eleanor Goulding (Denman+Gould) and Abi Wheeler. The project forms part of the Public Art Commission for Fanshawe Road, Cambridge, within Resonance–Cambridge — a programme connecting people to place alongside the new homes created by Cambridge Investment Partnership (CIP).
