PCS Medical Services, with vital support from Samworth Brothers Cornwall and Callington Rotary, are actively running a crucial cardiac screening programme in South-east Cornwall.

This initiative aims to identify undiagnosed heart conditions that could lead to serious health issues, including sudden cardiac arrest, in apparently healthy individuals. By offering accessible screenings, the programme will provide peace of mind for families and, more importantly, allow early detection and potential intervention, significantly improving outcomes for those identified with a cardiac anomaly.

This is a screening not a diagnostic service: any abnormal ECG will be passed to patients for them to take to their GP for investigation. This commitment to community health and safeguarding of our young and more mature residents, it’s supported by local business and charities.

Sessions are open to everybody and need to be booked. We will be asking for a donation from adults to help with funding our schools’ screening.

HOW IT WORKS:
An Electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG) is a quick, painless, and non-invasive test used to assess your heart's electrical activity. Here's what typically happens:

- You'll be asked to lie down comfortably, often on a bed or recliner.
- A trained assistant (male and female available) will then attach small, sticky patches called electrodes to specific areas on your chest, arms, and legs. These electrodes are connected by wires to the ECG machine. Sometimes, if there's excessive hair, small areas may need to be shaved to ensure good contact.
- Clothing will not need to be removed, a button up shirt is
advisable and crop top or sports bra for females.
- Once the electrodes are in place, the machine will record the electrical signals generated by your heart as it beats. You'll need to lie still and avoid talking during this short process, as movement can interfere with the results.
- The ECG machine translates these electrical impulses into a wavy line graph, which can be displayed on a screen or printed onto paper. The entire procedure usually takes only a few minutes.
- If the ECG comes up as abnormal the advice we give is for you to take it to your GP and ask them to have a look. Children’s ECG
that are abnormal will be referred by your GP to a Paediatric
Cardiologist.
