About the event

"A Phoebe Needles Christmas" Music Program at the December Center for Lifelong Learning
Presented by Ms. Juanita Smoot & Friends Jill Trinka & Bev Anspaugh

Are you ready for a wonderful, festive music program? Then come join us for our next Center for Lifelong Learning program in December, featuring Appalachian, African American, traditional, and international Christmas music and carols with dulcimer, autoharp, guitar, voice and piano.

ABOUT THE PRESENTERS/MUSICIANS:
Juanita Smoot lives on a farm in Henry, VA which she shared with her late husband, Jim Wilson. She is the proud mother of two adult sons, Justin and Alexander Hamlin. After receiving her Bachelor of Music degree from Belmont College in Nashville, TN, Juanita spent two years as a Missionary Journeyman in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil where she worked as an accompanist/music instructor at the South Brazilian Baptist Seminary. She earned a Master of Church Music/Organ Pedagogy degree from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Kentucky where she was also the recipient of the 1983 Faculty Award in Church Music Education. She has been involved in the music education of preschool age through adults in churches, studios, private and public schools and at the collegiate level. She was an “Artist in Residence” in Letcher County, KY and contributed the article, “Music and Movement Everyday -- Reality or Wishful Thinking?” to Worship Arts. Her professional memberships have included Sigma Alpha Iota, The Hymn Society, The American Guild of Organists, and Blue Star Mothers of America. She also served as the 2013-14 president of the board of directors of the Carolina Master Chorale in the greater Grand Strand area of SC. “Nita” has retired as an organist/music director twice since 2022 and now spends her time as a board member and volunteer at PNCI. She also volunteers with the Martinsville SPCA through Fido’s Finds and Kitties Collectibles resale store. She enjoys having more time to spend on her farm, hiking, visiting family and friends, and pursuing creative writing. She wonders how she ever had time to “work” and thinks retirement would have been even better 30 years ago! Most of all, she is thankful for the lifelong ability and opportunity to share her passion for music, Jesus Christ and community worship with others. After moving to Franklin Co in 2015, Nita first played for the CLL Christmas program that December. This is now her 6th concert program. She is always delighted to be a part of this special tradition at Phoebe Needles.

She dedicates her music to her dear friend, Jill, and to the friendship they have shared for over 35 years through music, beach walks and phone chats as they embraced the ups and downs of living life to its fullest!!

Dr. Jill Trinka lives in Murrells Inlet, SC. She retired in 2018 from Coastal Carolina University (Conway, SC) where she taught undergraduate and graduate ear training and sight-singing, elementary music repertoire and methods, American Music, World Music, and classroom instrument courses. She held previous academic posts in Texas, St. Thomas, & Arkansas. She holds an M.A. (Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest, Hungary, as a Ford Foundation Ringer Fellow) and Ph. D. in Music Education with an Ethnomusicology and Folklore cognate (U.T. at Austin). An internationally acknowledged Master Teacher in the Kodály philosophy of music education, she has directed and taught in Kodály Teacher Training Institutes throughout the United States since 1980. She is well known by children, parents, and music educators as “a dynamic, winsome, and energetic teacher and performer.” Her performances bring new life to the musical and cultural treasures of American folk music as she accompanies herself on the dulcimer, autoharp, guitar, and banjo. Jill’s publications – My Little Rooster, Bought Me a Cat, John, the Rabbit, and The Little Black Bull; Jill Trinka: The Bass Hall Children’s Concerts DVD (Ft. Worth, TX); and recordings Had a Little Rooster, There’s a Hole in the Bucket, and Old Joe Clark, with John Feierabend – are published by GIA Music. She enjoys teaching music workshops throughout the U.S., and giving private guitar, dulcimer, and autoharp lessons. She loves Zumba, swimming, walking, biking, cooking, reading, stretching, and solving Sudoku and crossword puzzles.
Jill dedicates her music today to her late husband, Major Craig John Hamilton DDS, who died one year ago today.

Mrs. Bev Anspaugh is a native of Southern Ohio. She and her husband Eric moved to Franklin County in 2010. She has had a love of music her entire life and has been singing since she was just a little girl! She has most recently been a member of the Franklin County Community Chorus, and Roanoque Baroque. She currently sings with the Roanoke Valley Choral Society, and serves as the Music & Choir Director at her church, Central Church of the Brethren. A favorite quote is "People who make music together cannot be enemies, at least while the music lasts." (Paul Hindemith)
