At its heart, Tá Brón Orm is a metaphoric narrative — an expression of global grief over the loss of language and culture through extreme social and political upheaval, rooted in the context of historical Ireland. In Irish, Tá Brón Orm is how we say “I’m sorry,” yet its direct translation is “Sadness is upon me.” This sadness sits heavy on the body, a weight passed down through generations. It can be shed, like an item of clothing — not sorrow for our own actions, but for the transformations of the land we call home.
Inspired by the Children of the Famine novel trilogy and set to music by OXN, a contemporary Irish alternative folk band, this new trio blends movement, story, and history. Original short stories by Michael McEvoy and costumes by Nashwa Maatouck frame a collaboration with dancers Ahmed Ghareeb, Shady Abdelrahman, and Sara Gabr.
This work was created and produced as part of the international exchange “Our Voice Together Now,” a collaboration between Orient Productions (Egypt), Sareyyet Ramallah (Palestine), and the Belfast International Arts Festival (Northern Ireland) with the support of the British Council.
في جوهره، "الحزن يخيم علي" هو سرد مجازي يعبر عن حزن عالمي على فقدان اللغة والثقافة، يضرب بجذوره في سياق أيرلندا التاريخية. عنوان العرض هو العبارة الأيرلندية التي تعني "أنا آسف"، لكن ترجمتها الحرفية هي "الحزن يخيم علي"؛ وهو عبء ينتقل عبر الأجيال يمكن التخلص منه كقطعة ملابس. إنه ليس حزناً على أفعالنا، بل على التحولات التي طرأت على الأرض التي نسميها وطناً.
مستوحى من ثلاثية "أطفال المجاعة" وعلى خلفية موسيقى لفرقة OXN الأيرلندية لموسيقى الفولك البديل، بمزج العرض بين الحركة والقصة والتاريخ بقصص قصيرة أصلية من تأليف مايكل مكفوي وأزياء نشوى معتوق، ويبث فيها الحياة الراقصين أحمد غريب، وشادي عبد الرحمن، وسارة جبر.
