After being driven to extinction seven hundred years ago, wild boar now roam pockets of the British Isles once more. But with growing worry over the impacts on people and the countryside, debate abounds over the right of the species to exist here.
Where did our wild boar come from? Where will they go next? What is it like to live with them? And what is it like to be one of them?
In this illustrated talk, author and science communicator Chantal Lyons shares her own story of studying and living with these idiosyncratic and intelligent creatures, and the voices of people up and down the country who either want them gone – or hope they are here to stay.
Presently based in Gloucester, Chantal Lyons grew up in the tidy countryside of Kent. In her twenties, her eyes were opened to the urgency of restoring lost species in Britain, inspiring her to study the relations between people and wild boar in the Forest of Dean. The resulting book, Groundbreakers (Bloomsbury, 2024)
