Local historian, Julian Cohen, will talk about the history of Buxton shops by focusing on the journeys taken by Potters, Hargreaves, Clowes chemist and Goddard’s music shops from the 1860s to the present day.
Amazingly, the first three are still with us today, with Goddards closing in 2018.
How come they all started up around the same time? What was going on in Buxton then?
What ups and downs have the owners and staff faced over the years?
And how come they have lasted so long?
Julian launched his book, ‘The History of Four Iconic Buxton Shops’, at the Pump Room a year ago with contributions from the families who currently own and run the shops. This time he will be talking in more detail about the shops, adding fascinating stories and anecdotes and mentioning other Buxton shops of the past, as well.
Refreshments available to purchase in The Pump Room.
Free event, but places must be booked online, in-person at The Pump Room, or call 01298214577.
