About the event

Uncovering Artifacts in the Attic (Free Monthly Lecture)
The Ethan Allen Homestead Museum presents our Free Monthly Lecture Program: “Uncovering Artifacts in the Attic: the Archaeology of the Archaeology at Ethan Allen Homestead and Interpreting its Changing Landscape” by archaeologist Niels Rinehart. Archaeological artifacts will be on display before and after the presentation (1-2 & 3-4).

This event is free for all to attend; seating is first come, first served. Q&A follows the presentation. Refreshments provided.

ABOUT THIS MONTH'S LECTURE:
Between 1979 and 1993, archaeologists conducted several excavations at the Ethan Allen Homestead, including a multi-summer project led by a graduate student at Boston University that recovered over 60,000 artifacts. These artifacts sat in the Museum’s attic for almost 35 years and for the last two years, volunteers at EAHM have donated numerous hours cataloging and bagging them for submission to the Vermont Archaeology Heritage Center in Barre. Although opportunities for additional work and analysis remain, this presentation reports on the results of research recently completed, focusing on what the excavations and artifacts can tell us about how the landscape surrounding the Allen Homestead has changed since the 1780s. The talk will also discuss future directions and questions for research at EAHM.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Niels Rinehart has volunteered at the Ethan Allen Homestead since the fall of 2022, working with Angie Grove and other volunteers to catalog artifacts recovered from the Museum’s attic and serving on the museum's Collections Committee. He also serves as an interpretive guide on weekends at the Homestead. Niels worked as a contract archaeologist throughout the Northeast and elsewhere in the US for many years, before joining the Vermont Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation (FPR). With FPR, Niels manages historic properties at state parks and state forests, consulting with the Vermont Division for Historic Preservation and other stakeholders. He lives in Jericho with his wife Lauren and their two sons, Liam and Abe.
