On July 16, 2025, the Cumberland Presbyterian Church made history by electing Rev. Jhony Montaño as Moderator of the 194th General Assembly. A Colombian of African descent, Rev. Montaño is the first person of African ancestry from any country to be elected to this prominent leadership role in the denomination. Jhony (pronounced “Johnny”) is the pastor of the second largest CP Church after Pathway with 1410 members in a city of 318,000 in southwestern Colombia. Jhony and his wife, Ruby, will in the DFW area briefly prior to traveling to Nashville, Tennessee.
The Rev. Jhony Montaño was born on December 24, 1977, in Guapi, Cauca, Colombia. He is the third of eight siblings and began attending the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Guapi at the age of eight.
At twelve, he made his profession of faith, accepting Christ as his Lord and Savior. His love for Jesus Christ soon deepened, and he felt the call to the holy ministry, becoming an active member of his congregation. Throughout his early years of service, he took on various leadership roles, including Deacon, Sunday School teacher, Youth Leader, and Worship Ministry Leader. These experiences solidified his desire to dedicate his life to pastoral ministry.
Rev. Montaño is married to Rev. Ruby Mabely Micolta. Together, they share a commitment to ministry and have a 16-year-old daughter, Ana Isabel
Montaño.
Currently, Rev. Montaño serves as the senior pastor of the "Jesucristo es la Solución" CPC in Popayán, Cauca, Colombia. Under his leadership, the congregation has grown to over 1,300 members, with an active mission and two outreach ministries. His pastoral work has fostered the formation of new leaders, many of whom now serve as pastors and ministry leaders, strengthening the local church's impact.
Rev. Montaño holds a Bachelor's Degree in Bible and Theology from the Christian Alliance and Missionary Seminary, and a Theology degree from the International Baptist University. He is also completing a Family Counseling Training and Certification Program.
With 24 years of service as a minister of the Word and Sacraments, Rev. Montaño remains steadfast in his mission to present himself before God as a faithful servant, unashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.
