Choosing and Caring for Trees: Landscape & Flowering Trees

Welcome to our upcoming event where we'll dive into everything you need to know about **landscape and flowering trees**. Join us in person for an informative session on selecting the perfect trees for your garden and the essential care they need to thrive. Learn from experts about **tree maintenance**, **pruning techniques**, and **disease prevention**. Plant Options:

🌳 Landscape Trees

  • Tulip Poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera) – A fast-growing, tall shade tree with distinctive tulip-shaped flowers and attractive fall foliage. Native to the eastern U.S.
  • Florida Red Maple (Acer rubrum) – Medium to large tree valued for its brilliant red fall color; tolerates wet soils and is native to Florida.
  • Pignut Hickory (Carya glabra) – A native hardwood tree producing edible nuts; slow-growing with strong, durable wood.
  • Tupelo (Nyssa sylvatica) – Also called Black Gum; native tree with brilliant fall color and tolerance to wet soils.
  • Sawtooth Oak (Quercus acutissima) – Fast-growing ornamental oak with lobed leaves; produces acorns that attract wildlife. Non-native from Asia.
  • Yaupon Holly (Ilex vomitoria) – Small to medium native tree or shrub with red berries that attract birds; evergreen foliage.
  • Wax Myrtle (Morella cerifera) – Native shrub or small tree with aromatic leaves and waxy berries; useful for privacy hedges or screening.

🌸 Flowering Trees

  • Eastern Redbud (Cercis canadensis) – Small native tree with striking pink to purple spring blooms; heart-shaped leaves and attractive form.
  • Yellow Trumpet Tree (Tabebuia sp.) – Showy ornamental tree with bright yellow trumpet-shaped flowers in spring; non-native from Central/South America.
  • American Fringe Tree (Chionanthus virginicus) – Small native tree with fragrant, lacy white flowers in spring; tolerant of various soil types.
  • Red Buckeye (Aesculus pavia) – Native small tree or shrub with tubular red flowers that attract hummingbirds; palmately compound leaves.
