About the event

Exploring the Civil Air Patrol Information Session
Come learn about the cadet Civil Air Patrol program and specifically about the Harnett County Composite Squadron.

Parents should come inside and fill out the Prospective Cadet Visitors Form with the visiting teen. This provides us with emergency contact information.

The focus of the first meeting will be physical training. Visiting prospective cadets should dress for activities outside in the weather and bring a water bottle. Please email 2d Lt John Holden at am9obiAhIGhvbGRlbiB8IG5jd2djYXAgISBvcmc= to reserve a spot!

We will have an Exploring Civil Air Patrol information session to explain the program to visitors and answer questions for any parents and teens attending. Potential cadets need to attend for four full meetings before we will consider membership on the 4th meeting. Attending consecutive meetings is very important. For this group, those four meetings would be September 4, 11 , 18, and 25.

Frequently Asked Questions for Prospective Cadets and Parents What is Civil Air Patrol (CAP)? CAP is the official auxiliary of the United States Air Force and has three main missions: Aerospace Education, Emergency Services, and Cadet Programs. You can learn more about Cadet Programs and watch a short video at this link: https://www.gocivilairpatrol.com/programs/cadets/parents/

How old do I have to be to join? You need to be 12-18 years old to join as a cadet. Cadets can remain a cadet until they reach 21 years of age, at which time they must transfer to senior membership. Interested individuals age 18 and up can join as senior members.

When and where are the weekly meetings? We meet at the Harnett Regional Jetport, 615 Airport Rd, Erwin, NC 28339 every Thursday from 7:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. (1900-2130).

What is the time commitment? Cadets are expected to attend weekly meetings. School does come first, so we understand that you may not be able to attend every meeting; however, weekly attendance is important to progress and promote through the program. Aside from weekly meetings, there are many opportunities for weekend and week long activities based on your interests. While they are not mandatory, we strongly encourage you to take advantage of these opportunities. Not only will you learn new skills, you will also have a fantastic time and make friends with other cadets all over the state.

When can I sign up? We require that you attend 4 meetings before we offer membership paperwork, so that you have a good idea of who we are, what we do, and what the program requires as far as time, cost, and commitment. After 3 weeks we will provide you with information on how to join and arrange a membership interview with our Cadet Programs staff for the prospective cadet and parent.

How do I sign up? At the 4th meeting bring us the following: ____Valid proof of identity (U.S. Passport or a certified copy of a birth certificate and a school report card/ID/driver's license). We don't need a copy to keep, we just need to see it. At that point, we will give you the web address to sign up and pay the $50 to National Headquarters for annual membership dues.
____2 copies of the CAPF 161(one for us, one for you) How much is it going to cost me? In addition to membership dues mentioned above ($50 annually to National HQ), you may need to purchase uniforms that are not in-stock including combat boots ($25-$60) and shoes for the dress blues uniforms. Typically we can loan you your main uniform items such as pants and blouse. We do collect a $10 deposit for each uniform item, which is refunded when you return the intact uniform either to swap for a larger size, or at the end of your CAP membership. Other costs are to attend any squadron, wing, or national activities you chose to go on. For example, you may go on an overnight activity that costs $20 for food and transportation, or a week long encampment over the summer that costs ~$150. We are a non-profit organization and do accept and appreciate donations in any amount to help offset costs of the services we provide. Will my child be safe? Cadet safety is of the utmost importance to us. Abuse or harassment of any kind is not tolerated. All senior members, and all cadets who are 18 years or older, go through cadet protection training to help guard against emotional and physical abuse. All senior members are required to submit fingerprints and undergo an FBI background check prior to joining. CAP mandates that there are always three personnel present whenever there are cadet activities (except for certain orientation flights, where the pilot and the cadet fly together for safety reasons).
