About the event

Fall 2025 Session- Derby Academy Registration Event & Social Skate
*Please note this event is our registration and open social skate, not a class day*

It's time once again to register for Derby Academy! Get yourself to the Thunderdome for our Social Skate to sign up and hang out with friends old and new! The Social Skate is $free$ to all former, current, and registering Academy students.

WHEN CAN I REGISTER?
Saturday, September 6 from 9:30am - 12:30pm

WHO CAN REGISTER? IS THERE A GENDER REQUIREMENT?
Y'all means all – Academy students come in all adult sizes, gender identities, shapes, experience levels, and all the rest! So long as you're 18 years or older, you can register for class.

HOW MUCH DOES DERBY ACADEMY COST?
*Pre-paid discount rate: $165 for 10 classes
*Per-class rate: $20 per class provided there are open spots available (Limited availability for Level 1)
*Payment by cash or check only

HOW MANY SPOTS ARE AVAILABLE? WHAT IF I CAN'T MAKE IT TO THE SOCIAL SKATE TO REGISTER?
With the influx of new skaters joining the derbyverse post-pandemic + the summer break, it's more important to us than ever that students register in person to get familiar with the commute to our facility in Buda and have time to get to know the space and people before the first class.
30 spots are available for Level 1; because space is so limited, Pre-Pay registration at the social skate will be prioritized; 22 spots will be held for pre-pay registration, the rest will be available for Per-Class or Pre-Pay registration on a first-come basis. We will keep a waitlist if needed.
If you absolutely can't make it to register in person on Sept 6, email us to be added to the waitlist (RGVyYnlBY2FkZW15T3JnYW5pemVycyB8IGdtYWlsICEgY29t). Please be advised- we will not be able to confirm registration email requests until after the Social Skate. If we still have space available, we will begin confirming email requests for Pre-Pay registration on Sunday 9/7, followed by any remaining Per-Class requests from the Social Skate and email requests in that order.

Fall Class Information:
10 Class Session, Saturdays Sep 13 - Nov 17
Level #1 8:30-10:30am
Level #2 10:30am-12:30pm

THERE ARE 2 LEVELS OF CLASSES:
Level #1 - Learn to skate/Hone your skills.
We focus on the skills you will need if you plan to tryout for TXRD's Rookie Training Program. We learn the skating stance, how to push, crossovers, T-stop, plow stop, falls and recovery, how to turn around, skate backwards and more. Most of the skills in this level are done individually without contact.

Level #2 - More advanced skating
Level 2 is not Wreck League, but it is a great class to take before or while enrolled in Wreck because we go in depth into the best form for hits and development. We focus on the derby skills that you learned in Level 1 (or already had from previous experience) and put those into practice skating in proximity with others. Derby is about contact with other skaters and this level affords you the opportunity to learn how to skate in a paceline and a pack. We teach snakes and gauntlets, whips and basic strategy. We do plenty of drills and other agility and endurance type activities. We do blocking and occasionally some light bouting, attendance and skater comfort permitting.
Skaters in the Rookie Training Program are encouraged to attend and improve their blocking, reaction time, and all the other skills that contribute to a successful skating career. Skaters' time and energy permitting of course

OTHER FAQ:
CAN I MISS A CLASS OR START AFTER THE FIRST CLASS?
Absolutely! Think of this like any high school class- it each class builds upon the last, but there are recaps and you'll get to review and learn the next week. That's why we offer Per Class pricing. And really, you're here for you- not for us; what you can put in will contribute to what you get out.
If a session is already a few weeks in and you want to join for the first time, please contact us to see if space is available. We're happy to have you if we can!

WHAT'S RIGHT FOR ME IF I COME FROM A FLAT TRACK BACKGROUND?
It totally depends on the person. Our physics is EXTREMELY different and there are a lot of postural divergences as well. Let's talk so we can maximize your experience and skating career.

DO I HAVE TO OWN SKATES AND GEAR?
Participants must provide their own quad skates, pref speed skates if possible; we do not recommend using figure skates. Our most important advice regarding skate is this- there's a brand called "Derby Skates" that are often sold at Academy and another brand called Cobras. These are NOT derby skates. Not even close. They don't have adjustable trucks or toe stops and come with the worst wheels. They're a con, so save your money.
In TXRD and for those skating in TXRD’s space, mouth guards are encouraged but not required.
In addition to skates, you'll need a helmet, knee pads, elbow pads, and wrist guards. It's strongly recommended that you also provide your own helmet and pads; if absolutely necessary, loaners are available though we cannot guarantee quality as this gear is all donated.
When purchasing gear, please buy items intended for impact and roller derby- no construction knee pads, martial arts wrist wraps, etc. It’s not worth saving a few bucks on gear if that gear fails and lands you a hospital bill. Invest in your safety and know that there’s always a market for resale. There are plenty of Beginner's packages out there that are affordable- no reason to spend good cash on frustration and regret. The Derby-verse is full of experienced people willing to offer advice to perfect strangers. Just ask!
Medusa Skates, Austin's first and only derby shop, is owned and operated by TXRD legend Glitterotica and staffed by current and former skaters from Austin-area leagues. They're all amazing and can help you figure out exactly what you need! Medusa Skates is located at 6005 Burnet Road near Northcross and on the web at www.medusaskates.com.
