les musiciens David Carriere, Jane Penny, Marta Cikojevic et Riley Fleck - écrivent une musique intemporelle qui allie toujours immédiateté et profondeur. Bury the Key, leur premier album depuis 2020 et leur nouveau label Ghostly International, est une réintroduction captivante pour le groupe montréalais : toujours raffiné, indubitablement maître de son art mélodique, mais ne craignant pas d'évoluer et de se confronter à des tonalités différentes, parfois plus sombres.
L'album fait face à des sentiments autrefois enfermés, engageant le va-et-vient entre le bonheur, l'hédonisme et l'autodestruction. Bien que souvent habitées par des personnages fictifs, leurs chansons lumineuses, groovy et autoproduites s'inspirent d'observations personnelles : l'intimité (à l'intérieur et à l'extérieur du groupe), le comportement toxique, la consommation de drogues et la peur de l'apocalypse.
Lorsque l'enregistrement a commencé, ils ont remarqué un changement et se sont penchés sur la question, surnommés en plaisantant "evil TOPS" (TOPS maléfiques), dit Penny. "Nous sommes toujours perçus comme un groupe doux, naïf ou amical à la canadienne, mais nous avons relevé le défi de vraiment canaliser le monde qui nous entoure. À travers la lentille d'une époque imminente et la clarté qui vient avec l'âge, TOPS plonge dans un royaume disco plus sinistre avec Bury the Key, donnant à leur pop sophistiquée et douce un côté plus aiguisé.

Bury the Key, their first full-length since 2020 and with new label home Ghostly International, is a captivating reintroduction for the Montréal band: ever refined, undoubtedly masters of their melodic craft yet unafraid of evolving and testing themselves against different, at times darker tones. The album faces feelings once locked away, engaging the give-and-take between happiness, hedonism, and self-destruction.
While often inhabited by fictional figures, their glowing, grooving, self-produced songs draw from personal observations: intimacy (both inside and outside the band), toxic behavior, drug use, and apocalyptic dread. When recording started, they noticed a shift and leaned in, jokingly dubbed "evil TOPS," says Penny. "We're always kind of seen as a soft band or like naive or friendly in a Canadian way, but we made it a challenge to really channel the world around us." Through the lens of a looming epoch and the clarity that comes with age, TOPS dip into a more sinister disco realm with Bury the Key, giving their soft-focus sophisti-pop a sharpened edge.
