As the old colonial order collapses, French documentary maker Dominique Henry invites former Belgian poet Els Moors to join him in documenting the absurdities of the surreal country of Belgium on a slow journey across the water.

The journey goes from Charleroi to Willebroek, and the canal was the epicentre where workers, bourgeoisie and nobility briefly joined forces to claim Belgium's right to exist. What remains after the collapse of the steel, coal and car industries, which once made Belgium a thriving country in record time?

Much more than a journey through a hastily cobbled-together country, Notre Kanaal is a tribute to every people who resist the whims of greed and destruction of those in power with humour, wisdom and love. The beautiful music was written especially for the film by JANiNE.
