About the exhibition: "Les Ruines de Paris" – Marchand & Meffre
In January 2024, on a winter afternoon, Marchand and Meffre embarked on an experimental project: with the help of AI, they generated over 52,000 images, averaging 650 iterations per final visual. Despite some technical imperfections, the emotional impact of their work was immediate. Confronting the slow disintegration of such a familiar city proved far more unsettling than they had anticipated.
However, for the two photographers, AI is not merely a tool for visualizing fantasies. This technology inevitably carries norms, biases, and stereotypes. By applying it within the concrete, historical, and cultural context of Paris, they explore the boundary between reality and simulation. Their project goes far beyond an aesthetic exercise: it raises a fundamental and unsettling question - Could humanity become obsolete in the face of its own creations?
The exhibition “Les Ruines de Paris” runs until October 30.
