As a musician, DJ and co-founder of the Leisure System label, Sam Barker has helped push the boundaries of dance music in Berlin, looking beyond 4/4 techno to explore left-field sound design and rhythmic complexity. His approach – both solo and in the duo Barker & Baumecker with longtime Panorama Bar resident nd_baumecker – combines bass music tropes, breakbeat, dub and ambient elements while keeping a strong connection to the dancefloor.
This vision has guided Barker & Baumecker’s EPs, LPs, and remixes for Ostgut Ton (including the 2016 LP Turns), as well as Barker’s curatorial direction for Leisure System, one of the longest club night residencies at Berghain. Having released records by Dopplereffekt and early EPs by Objekt and Visionist, Barker has long operated on techno’s periphery while seeking to shift its center. His EP Debiasing marked his solo debut on Ostgut Ton, questioning what is “necessary” to maintain dancefloor momentum, while his 2019 solo album Utility offered a playful but non-ironic exploration of utilitarian and transhumanist ideas.
A classically trained musician, British-born and Berlin-based Barker is also an instrument designer and builder under the name Voltek, combining coding with analogue, electric and acoustic construction. Most recently, he collaborated with Underground Resistance’s Ray 7 on a sonic architectural exploration of Detroit’s empty factories using self-programmed analogue percussion instruments.

Altijd op zoek naar nieuwe ritmische vormen, overschrijdt hij de grenzen van 4/4 techno om meer experimentele terreinen te verkennen, waarbij hij bass music, breakbeat, dub en ambient combineert. Samen met nd_baumecker in het duo Barker & Baumecker heeft hij verschillende opvallende releases op Ostgut Ton op zijn naam staan, terwijl hij een unieke en veeleisende visie op clubmuziek heeft ontwikkeld.
Als discrete maar invloedrijke pionier heeft Barker er ook toe bijgedragen dat Leisure System een van de langstlopende residenties van Berghain is geworden, door er avant-gardistische artiesten als Dopplereffekt en Objekt uit te nodigen. Zijn soloalbum ‘Utility’ uit 2019 illustreert zijn aanpak perfect: cerebrale maar diep fysieke muziek, waarin experimenteren hand in hand gaat met intensiteit. Deze in Berlijn gevestigde Britse muzikant combineert zijn klassieke kennis met een benadering als geluidstechnicus en ontwerpt onder de naam Voltek zijn eigen instrumenten en elektronische apparaten.
